Hanlontown Community Bank Museum

The Bank was designed by architect Einar Broaten, born in Norway and associated with several Prairie-style buildings in the Mason City area. The bank opened in 1920 and closed in 2000.

Following its closing, two charitable foundations bought the building and donated it to the society. Intact features include the molded-plaster ceiling moldings, interior stained glass, drinking fountain, customer writing desk, quarter-sawn oak casings, moldings, interior office partitions, vaults and teller desks.

The bank museum is operated by Preserve Our Past local committee and plans to eventually supplement the main-floor museum with a community museum and social center in the basement and second floor, which was formerly an apartment occupied by the bank manager. There is a souvenir shop on the main level.

Open: Sundays, 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day; during annual Sundowner Day festivities, other special events.
Location: Downtown Hanlontown
